Monday Morning Quarterback’s Peter King is a fan of the Chicago Bears’ signing of free agent quarterback Mike Glennon.

After an underwhelming start to free agency, the Chicago Bears have rebounded nicely.

Over the course of the past weekend, the Bears have signed several players with upside. Those players include wide receiver Kendall Wright, corner back Marcus Cooper, and offensive tackle Tom Compton.

Entering the second wave of free agency, the Bears’ haul does not look as bad as initially reviewed. In fact, some of the Bears’ initial signings are receiving a new perspective. Monday Morning Quarterback’s Peter King applauded the Bears’ signing of free agent quarterback Mike Glennon.

"I actually think the Bears did a good deal—relatively—with Mike Glennon, now that the numbers are out. It’s $16 million guaranteed in year one, and then only $2.5 million guaranteed after that in a three-year deal. Glennon has 2017 to prove he’s a good starter, or the Bears will go QB-prospecting again in 2018. And it’s no lock they won’t take a passer high in this draft either."

The biggest issue that Bears’ fans took with the Glennon signing is that they felt the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ backup quarterback was the team’s newest project at the quarterback position. For the Bears, Glennon is closer to a bridge quarterback than he is a project. After the 2017 season, Glennon is essentially on consecutive one-year deals. Meaning, the Bears can cut Glennon with little costs after the 2017 season. Or, Glennon could transition into being a backup quarterback for the rookie that the Bears will undoubtedly draft in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Glennon’s signing is a win-win for the Bears because they have a quarterback in 2017 that will undoubtedly be better for the team than Jay Cutler, Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley, or Connor Shaw would have been; and, they will be able to select the quarterback that they desire in the 2017 NFL Draft and allow him to develop behind Glennon.
