With Mike Glennon on his way in, the Chicago Bears have released quarterback Jay Cutler.

Jay Cutler is no longer a member of the Chicago Bears. That is a something that some Bears’ fans have wanted to hear for an extremely long time. The Bears released Cutler on Thursday. It was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, who also quickly gave an option of a team who could be interested in Cutler.

The New York Jets have been mentioned as a suitor for Cutler for a long time. The Jets’ quarterback situation is almost as ugly as the Bears. Getting Cutler a fresh start in New York would certainly make a ton of sense. However, if the interest is not there with the Jets, Cutler may have a hard time finding a starting quarterback job.

Retirement is undoubtedly a possibility here.

Cutler leaves the Chicago Bears as the most decorated passer in the history of the team.

He has the most passing yards (23,443) and touchdowns (154) in the history of the team. Believe it or not, Cutler’s 61.8 completion percentage is also the highest of any Bears quarterback who has ever thrown 280 passes or more for the team.

Cutler will likely more be remembered for his seemingly poor attitude and inability to lead the Bears to many winning seasons. However, he clearly the best statistical quarterback in franchise history.

The Bears now move forward with Mike Glennon, and probably a rookie at the quarterback position. It was time for Cutler and the Bears to part ways, but he will undoubtedly cast a big shadow over Glennon and whoever takes snaps under center for the Bears.

Jay Cutler will probably be remembered in Chicago as an underachiever. He came to the Bears with so many expectations, that he was probably doomed from the start. Cutler is far from a legend of the team, but he is an important part of their history.
