We continue to look at 2017 NFL Draft targets for the Chicago Bears. Now we look at another good option for an upgrade at the tight end position.

We already have seen that the Chicago Bears have a need at tight end, we also have seen a monster prospect in the name of O.J. Howard. Here is another option for the position, David Njoku out of the Miami Hurricanes.

You can say Njoku fights Howard for the award of the best tight end of this 2017 draft class. This kid is only 20-years old and plays like a big man. He is big, strong and incredibly athletic, at 6-4 with 246 pounds he is a terrible mismatch to linebackers in the middle of the field. His combine numbers show how much athletic can he be.

He would have set the record for the broad jump for tight ends with 11’1” if not for Bucky Hodges 11’2” mark settle in the same day. Njoku was a top performer in other two drills. He was the third best in the vertical jump with 37,5 inches and third in the three-cone drill with 6.97 seconds. This show how is game could be effective on Sundays.

His hands are also incredibly reliable. In the last two years, Njoku has made 64 receptions for 1,060 yards and nine touchdowns. His hands are secure to make the catch but also are quick and strong enough to win the push-offs. Whoever plays quarterback for the Bears will need a guy like Njoku to look in the field.

If Alshon Jeffery doesn’t come back, Njoku could be a great replacement in the passing game, if Jeffery agrees to come back in free agency, Njoku would help take the pressure off of Jeffery. He would probably become the second option in this offense. Selecting Njoku could also help former first round pick Kevin White to get back to his college production to help the team to have a good offense again.

Njoku could be for the Bears what his pro comparison and former Bear, Greg Olsen, is for the Carolina Panthers, a game changer. Wouldn’t it be great to draft a Greg Olsen again?

Njoku may have put himself out of the Bears reach after his combine showing, but anything can happen. Of course, he won’t be in the conversation for the third overall pick, but I can see Njoku becoming a Bear after a trade down or, somehow, a slip to the 36 overall pick. Now that would be an amazing win for the Chicago Bears in the 2017 NFL Draft.
