Will the Chicago Bears make a run at Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Chase Daniel?

The Chicago Bears want to add a franchise quarterback this off season. The team is done with Jay Cutler, but there are only so many talented quarterbacks to go around. Unless the Bears take a quarterback with the third overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, they are going to have a tough time finding a talented young player at the position.

Perhaps they will get creative when trying to solidify their quarterback situation? Attacking the backup quarterback market would make sense for a team like the Bears.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Chase Daniel is “drawing interest on the trade market.” Is he is a good fit for the Bears?

Daniel has played only one season in Philadelphia, as he signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the team last off season. Daniel was brought in to be a possible starter, but things changed when the Eagles traded up for Carson Wentz.

Wentz had a strong rookie season, and Daniel is not going to see the field in Philly unless there is an injury to Wentz. Unless multiple teams are showing big interest, I imagine that Daniel could be had for a relatively low cost.

More from Chicago Bears

Daniel is the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL and Wentz is clearly their franchise signal caller. The Eagles might as well find a cheaper backup option if a team is willing to give up assets for Daniel.

I would not be surprised to see someone swing a deal for Daniel, but should it be the Chicago Bears? In a word, no.

Daniel would be a decent stop-gap option, but at 30-years-old, he does not represent any future upside. I could see the Bears trading for Daniel and also taking a quarterback at some point in the 2017 NFL Draft. Daniel would be the short-term quarterback while the rookie would be groomed to take over long-term.

However, if that is the direction that the Bears want to go, they might as well just re-sign Brian Hoyer. They wouldn’t have to give up any draft capital and Hoyer is already familiar with the team and offense.

Chase Daniel is a solid NFL quarterback, but he is not a guy who you can build around. The Chicago Bears need to find some upside at the quarterback position, and Daniel is not that guy.
