Acquiring New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly the top priority for the Chicago Bears this off-season. How  much would trading for Garoppolo cost the Bears?

The Chicago Bears have a top priority this off-season.

If recent reports are to be believed, the Bears’ top priority this off-season is to acquire New England Patriots’ backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. With Tom Brady showing no signs of slowing down, the Patriots are expected to engage in trade discussions regarding Garoppolo this off-season.

What will would acquiring Garoppolo cost the Bears?

Being that acquiring Garoppolo is said to be the top priority for the Bears this off-season, that indicates that general manager Ryan Pace firmly believes that the Eastern Illinois alum can be next franchise quarterback of the Bears.

For the Bears, there will be two prices to pay. The price to acquire Garoppolo from the Patriots and then the price to sign Garoppolo to a contract extension. Fortunately for the Bears, there is a blueprint to follow for both.

In terms of the cost of acquiring Garoppolo from the Patriots, a blueprint for such a deal may have came last Summer when the Philadelphia Eagles traded Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings gave up their 2017 first round selection and their 2018 fourth round selection. Given the severity of Teddy Bridgewater‘s knee injury, the Vikings were acquiring Bradford to be their starting quarterback for at least the next two seasons.

A first round draft pick and fourth round draft pick is about what the Patriots should be expecting for Garoppolo. The Bears’ currently hold the 3rd overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft and two 4th round draft picks. It goes without saying that one of the Bears’ 2017 fourth round draft picks would be used in the trade. The Bears won’t be giving up their 3rd overall draft pick in a trade for Garoppolo but there other ways the team could sacrifice a first round selection. The Bears could either trade down from No. 3 and use the 2017 first round pick they receive in their trade with the Patriots. Or, the Bears can offer up their 2018 first round draft pick.

Moving past the trade, the Bears then will need to sign Garoppolo to a contract extension given he is entering the final year of his contract. The argument could be made that the Bears should let him play out his final season but that is not how business operates in the NFL. In terms of a contract, the blueprint will be the deal that Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans. Osweiler signed a four-year, $72-million contract with the Texans last off-season.
