The season opener for the Illinois Fighting Illini football team was setting up to be a disappointment as the Fighting Illini entered the fourth quarter on Saturday trailing Youngstown State 9-7.
In the fourth quarter, the Fighting Illini scored 21 points to defeat Youngstown State 28-17.
Fighting Illini quarterback Wes Lunt led the charge in the fourth quarter. Lunt was responsible for all three of the touchdowns that the Fighting Illini scored in the fourth quarter.
Lunt was impressive for the Fighting Illini in his first start as the team’s quarterback on Saturday.
Lunt finished the game completing 24 of his 38 passes for a total of 284 passing yards and 4 touchdowns.
Freshman wide receiver Mike Dudek led the Fighting Illini in receiving on Saturday. Dudek totaled 61 receiving yards and 1 touchdown on 3 receptions.
Junior running back Josh Ferguson led the Fighting Illini in rushing on Saturday. Ferguson rushed for a total of 43 yards on 11 carries in the Fighting Illini season opener on Saturday. As a team, the Fighting Illini rushed for 78 yards on 21 carries.
One area of concern for the Fighting Illini on Saturday was their defense against the run. Youngstown State’s offense rushed for a total of 201 yards on 59 carries against the Fighting Illini on Saturday.
After their victory on Saturday, the Fighting Illini next play against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on September 6.
