The Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars kick off the second week of the NFL Pre-Season with ESPN’s presentation of Monday Night Football on Thursday night.
The game between the Bears and Jaguars kicks off the football programming for Monday Night Football.
Entering this game, the area to watch for the Bears will be special teams.
The Bears’ special teams struggled last Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears struggles on special teams last week came mostly on punts and kick offs.
Pat O’Donnell and Tress Way are competing to be the Bears’ punter this season and both are looking to improve from their struggles last week. O’Donnell averaged 43.5 yards per his 2 punts against the Eagles last Friday while Way averaged 37.5 per his 2 punts last Friday. O’Donnell’s second punt last Friday is what led to improved average.
As for the kickoff team, the Bears need to improve their coverage. Josh Huff returned 4 kickoffs for the Eagles last Friday against the Bears for a total of 143 yards and 1 touchdown.
Beyond special teams, the backup quarterback competition could be decided after tonight’s game.
Jimmy Clausen had a passer rating of 134.6 in Friday’s game against the Eagles and gained the advantage over Jordan Palmer, who had a passer rating of 94.5 in that same game. Clausen will play with the second team on Thursday and could clinch the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Jay Cutler.
