The Chicago Cubs could add a major addition to their long-term outfield picture within the next two weeks.
According to a report from Jesse Sanchez, the Cubs are among teams interested in 27-year old Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo. Sanchez mentions the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and San Francisco Giants as other teams that are interested in Castillo.
Castillo would be a major addition to the Cubs’ long-term picture.
Sanchez offered a mini scouting report on Castillo:
Here’s what we know: Castillo is a right-handed hitter with power, has plus-plus speed and is viewed by some as a line-drive hitter. Scouts also like his athleticism. He’ll have to start the season in the Minor Leagues, but there’s a belief that he could be in the big leagues by the end of the season. He’s expected to compete for a starting job in Spring Training.
Outfield is a position of need for the Cubs.
Unfortunately for the Cubs, the free agency market for outfielders this winter is thin. That is why the Cubs may be enticed to aggressively pursue Castillo.
If signed by the Cubs, Castillo would undoubtedly start his career with the Iowa Cubs. Though, Castillo’s stay in Iowa would likely just be for the second half of this season as he likely will be on the Cubs’ 2015 Opening Day roster.
Castillo will be showcasing his talents for Major League teams next weekend and then the expectation is that he will sign soon after that.
