NBA Free Agency Rumors: Chicago Bulls Lead The Way For Pau Gasol

While there has been question over the past couple of days over whether or not the Chicago Bulls are still a serious contender to sign Carmelo Anthony, there is no doubting the Bulls’ contention for another free agent.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Bulls, along with the Oklahoma City Thunder, are in the lead for the services of free agent forward Pau Gasol.

The Bulls may be in the lead for Gasol, however, they will not pull the trigger on any deal until they know Anthony’s decision.

In his meeting with the Bulls last Thursday, Gasol was promised to a spot in the starting rotation. Meaning Gasol would be the Bulls’ starting power forward to start the season with Taj Gibson once again serving as the team’s sixth man.

Gasol would provide the Bulls with an added dimension of scoring in the post. The Bulls have lacked a definitive scorer down low and Gasol could certainly fulfill that need. Gasol also is an excellent ball-handler to go along with his a respectable rebounding skills.

It remains to be seen if the Bulls would be able to afford both Gasol and Anthony. Though, in both cases, the Bulls prefer to do a sign-and-trade.

Gasol likely will not make his decision on where to play next season until Anthony has.

Gasol turned 34 this month.

They will wait to pull the trigger, but getting Gasol likely means that Gibson is headed out in a S&T or if Gibson is going to play starting SF for Chicago next year. Gibson played at SF for a game when Deng was injured before he was traded to CLE. So, this is not impossible, but Gibson is not a traditional SF. S&T for obtaining Melo or another player (SG/SF) would also be plausible. Chicago can’t obtain Gasol then trade him due to the rules.

Very interesting to say the least ??? Gasol starting at power foward does spell trouble for Taj. Taj would not make a good SF at all. He’s earned the right to start with chicago or somewhere else in the league. Pau would have to play back up center and PF for less $$$$. Gasol can come in and help as long as he can stay healthy. He has a lot of Euro years along with his NBA years.
