The Chicago Cubs pulled the trigger on a trade, shipping both Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Oakland A’s. In return, the Cubs get the A’s top-rated prospect, shortstop Addison Russell, second rated prospect, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and a player to be named later.
Samardzija rejected a contract offer of $85 million recently, so the Cubs were actively shopping him. Jason Hammel drew interest from a few teams, including the San Francisco Giants, Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles.
Both Hammel and Samardzija ranked in the top 15 in ERA. The A’s own major league baseball’s best record, but were worried about their starting pitching. This moves really solidifies their pitching now.
The Cubs have been looking for young talent. There is talent that is certainly almost ready to come up, so Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer could be trying to restock the minor league system. It was expected that Samardzija alone could have brought in major league ready talent, and the way Hammel has been pitching he could have also.
Get ready Cubs fans, perhaps the coming of the young talent will be here sooner than you thought.
