There is saying when it comes to the courtship of NBA Free Agents. The saying for the teams interested in the top free agents is that you want to be either the first team or last team to visit with the free agent. If that is the case, then the Chicago Bulls may be sitting in a prime position in the pursuit of Carmelo Anthony.
According to a report from ESPN, the Bulls will be the first team that Anthony visits with when free agency begins on Tuesday. Anthony will visit with the Bulls on Tuesday before meeting with the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
The Bulls, Mavericks, Rockets, and New York Knicks are believed to be the favorites in the Anthony sweepstakes.
Notice that neither the Miami Heat nor the Los Angeles Lakers are among the teams that Anthony is scheduled to visit this week.
While the Bulls may not be able to offer Anthony the most money, the team does offer Anthony the best opportunity to win a title. Pairing Anthony with Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and head coach Tom Thibodeau would certainly propel the Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference.
Ideally, the best way for the Bulls to acquire Anthony would be through a sign-and-trade with the Knicks. The biggest asset that the Bulls have in a potential sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks is Carlos Boozer. Boozer’s expiring contract in 2015 figures to work well with the Knicks’ rebuilding plan. However, the Knicks have been reluctant to involve Boozer in trade discussions with the Bulls.
The Bulls also acquired forward Anthony Randolph in a draft day trade on Thursday. Randolph is not a fit for the Bulls but is a player that the Knicks were once high on. Randolph also has a contract that expires in 2015.
The Bulls can officially begin contacting free agents at 11:01 central time on Monday night.
