2014 NBA Draft: Bulls' Draft Blueprint

Tonight is the NBA Draft. Tonight is also the night that the Chicago Bulls will either firmly implant themselves in the sweepstakes for Carmelo Anthony or continue on the same path that has seen the team fail in the playoffs time and time again.

Here is the blueprint for the Bulls tonight.

Scenario: Bulls Trade At Least One Of Their First Round Picks

The one thing that has to happen tonight for the Bulls is that the team needs to trade at least one of their two first round draft picks. The Bulls hold the rights to the 16th and 19th overall selections in the first round of tonight’s draft. It goes without saying that the Bulls need to create financial flexibility in order to sign Anthony. Two first round, rookie-scale contracts would significantly restrict the Bulls in their efforts to acquire Anthony.

Scenario: Bulls Trade Both Of Their First Round Picks

The main scenario that has the Bulls trading both first round draft picks is the scenario that has the them acquiring Kevin Love from the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight. The Timberwolves seemed to have soften their stance on trading Love before the NBA so there is no guarantee that they trade their all-star tonight. The Bulls are offering a package to the Timberwolves that includes their two first round draft picks as well as Taj Gibson and Tony Snell.

The Bulls could also trade both first round picks in an attempt to clear more financial space in order to sign Anthony.

Scenario: Bulls Draft Players That Are Not A Fit With Roster.

If the Bulls draft players on Thursday night that are not a fit with their roster, then that would be a sign that they are drafting for another team. This could mean that the Bulls are drafting players for the Timberwolves as part of a trade for Kevin Love or this could mean that the Bulls are drafting on the behalf of the New York Knicks as part of a sign-and-trade for Anthony.

Scenario: Bulls Use Both First Round Draft On Players That Fit Their Roster.

This is the scenario that Bulls fans do not want to see occur. If the Bulls use both of their first round draft picks on players that are a fit with their roster then this indicates that the team is not confident about their chances of acquiring Love or Anthony. This scenario also means that the Bulls would likely bring over Nikola Mirotic from Spain.

The Bulls could also use their two first round draft picks on European players. If that is the case, then the team would still be confident about their chances of landing Anthony or Love.
