On the night before the NBA Draft, the Houston Rockets have traded Omer Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Why is this significant?
This is significant because the Rockets just became a serious threat to the Chicago Bulls in their pursuit of Carmelo Anthony. If the Rockets were going to be able to sign Anthony to a max-contract, then the team would have needed to trade Asik and point guard Jeremy Lin. If the Rockets are able to trade Lin, then the team would have enough money available in order to pursue both Anthony and LeBron James.
That is the doomsday scenario for the Bulls.
If James and Anthony are eyeing playing together and the Rockets have the financial motives to make it happen, then the Bulls would once again be duped in a big free agency summer.
The ball is now in the Bulls’ court.
The Bulls need to make a move on Thursday. The Bulls have two first round draft picks in Thursday’s draft as bargaining chips. If the Bulls are going to have any chance at signing Anthony, then the team will need to move one of those picks or, at the very least, select European players.
The time for rumors is quickly coming to an end as teams need to start taking action in order put themselves in the best position to acquire one of the superstar free agents available.
