Tom Thibodeau Pushing For Carmelo Anthony To Sign With Chicago Bulls

On the surface, impending free agent Carmelo Anthony does not appear to be the type of player that fits into Chicago Bulls’ head coach Tom Thibodeau’s system. Anthony’s offensive-first mentality would not seem to appease the defensive-first mentality of Thibodeau.

Despite that appearance, Thibodeau is fully on board with the Bulls’ pursuit of Anthony.

According to a report from the Chicago Sun Times, Thibodeau is not only on board but he is making it very much known that he wants to coach Anthony on the Bulls for the seasons to come.

According to one of Anthony’s former coaches, Thibodeau has reached out to him and to several other coaches who have worked with Anthony with numerous calls.

‘‘I even told Tom that there may be days he will want to blow his own head off when it comes to Melo’s defense, but he keeps saying he knows he can make it work,’’ the coach said. ‘‘It’s not that Carmelo can’t play defense, it’s just how often. And he knows every trick in the book on getting around that.’’

Thibodeau is not the only doing background checks on a potential Anthony-Bulls union.

Anthony has spoken with several former Bulls’ players about what it is like to play with Thibodeau. Anthony has also been in contact with Joakim Noah since the All-Star break about the idea of playing with the Bulls.

‘‘There’s no question [the Bulls] would be better with [Anthony], with or without his defensive inconsistencies,’’ the coach said.

Anthony will make his decision on Monday over whether or not to opt out of his current contract with the New York Knicks. Though, at this point, the decision on Monday is nothing but a formality as it has been widely reported for much of the past month that Anthony will be opting out and testing free agency.

There was a growing idea that the Bulls could manufacture a sign-and-trade with the Knicks for Anthony, but a report from the Chicago Tribune indicates that the Knicks are not interested in Carlos Boozer. The Bulls were believed to be dangling Boozer and one of their first round draft picks in front of the Knicks for Anthony.

This week figures to be pivotal in the Bulls’ pursuit of Anthony as the team continues to make room financially to sign the superstar.
