Chicago Bulls 2014 NBA Draft Profile: Rodney Hood

In our look at possible draft picks for the Chicago Bulls, we will take a look at former Duke forward Rodney Hood.

Hood is the prototypical wing. He measures 6-8, and weighs 208 pounds. He is a good shooter, either from the mid-range or outside. Last season, he shot 46% overall, 49% from two range and 49% from three. In his two-year college career, he has hit 45% from the field, 50% from two-range and 40% from three.

With his shooting ability, Hood is able to spread the floor for the offense. That is one ability that is coveted in today’s NBA. He could be of great help for Derrick Rose, allowing him more room to operate. He has the quick first step to take defenders off the dribble. He also has other ways of scoring, such as cuts, spot-ups and even step backs.

Hood has a good feel for the game, sees the floor well. and executes well in the half-court. He rarely turns the ball over, having a 10% turnover rate. He is an efficient player, taking what the defense gives him, and rarely looks out of control.

Even though he is a small forward, Hood has the ability to play power forward when his team uses a small lineup. He can use his quick first step against the slower big men. I’m not sure if he’ll do much of that in the NBA, which has quicker power forwards. He may be better at switching off to smaller shooting guards rather than take on the bigs.

Hood needs to bulk up his upper body strength. He has trouble rebounding, and one reason is strength. On defense, he doesn’t quite have the same motor. He does have good lateral movement, so if a coaching staff can get his hustle up he could be a decent defender.

Even though Hood played just two years, he is the fifth-oldest prospect in the draft. He originally started at Mississippi State, but then transferred to Duke and sat out a year. In today’s NBA, the younger you are the better it is for the team.

With his ability to spread defenses, Rodney Hood can be an asset to the Chicago Bulls. He can add some much-needed scoring punch to the offense. If he bulks up a little more, he can also be an asset on defense. He can be a player Bulls fans can cheer on for some time.
