Charles Barkley is perhaps the greatest analysis of all things NBA. The reason why Barkley stands out on the top is because he is not afraid to call out bullshit when he sees it.
That is why Barkley held no punches when speaking about the Bulls’ and growing interest in their head coach Tom Thibodeau.
“Every year the idiots in Chicago, either they don’t want to pay Thibs or his name comes up for other jobs. I wish the Bulls were smart enough to say ‘We’ve got one of the best coaches in the NBA and he’s not going anywhere,’ ” Barkley said Wednesday on the “Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN Chicago 1000. “I don’t understand why they don’t appreciate Thibs there.”-Charles Barkley, ESPN Chicago
While Thibodeau is widely appreciated by every Bulls fan that is able to breathe, there is some question over how much Thibodeau is valued by the Bulls’ organization.
After calling the Bulls “the stupidest organization in the NBA”, Barkley continued his argument by pointing out that the San Antonio Spurs would never let rumors linger when it came to head coach Gregg Popovich.
“No guys does more with less than Coach Thibodeau,” Barkley said. “… He gets more out of their team than any coach could. Now, if he’s not happy and someone wants to give a bunch of draft picks for him that’s a totally different animal. But it’s disappointing to me that every single year there’s chatter about Thibs. You think people would let somebody say something about Gregg Popovich? ‘He’s our coach. He’s not going anywhere.’ The Spurs would release a statement ASAP.” -Barkley, ESPN Chicago
This off-season alone, Thibodeau has been linked to the openings with the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies and Lakers are believed to be planning to ask the Bulls’ front office for permission to interview Thibodeau.
As Barkley alluded to, all the Bulls’ front office has to do is release a statement saying that the team has no intention of letting Thibodeau interview for any vacant head coach positions in the NBA.
Some contest that would set a bad precedent with other employees, but that is not true. Unless the move would be giving Thibodeau a label such as president of basketball operations, the Bulls’ would not be preventing a promotion for Thibodeau. Therefore, there would be no bad precedent set.
But since the Bulls’ refuse to comment on Thibodeau rumors, that is the reason why this circus continues.
The circus continues even though Thibodeau has no interest in leaving Chicago. Thibodeau not only has begun making personnel decisions for next season with the Bulls, but the head coach is actively involved in the team’s pursuit of Carmelo Anthony. That does not sound like a head coach that is looking for his next opportunity.
The Bulls’ treatment of Barkely is bullshit. Credit Barkley for calling the team out on it.
