Chicago Bulls’ head coach Tom Thibodeau is no stranger to rumors that have him filling major head coaching vacancies within the NBA. For multiple seasons, Thibodeau has been rumored to be the next head coach of the New York Knicks. The Bulls thwarted those rumors with a long-term extension that puts him under contract with the Bulls through the 2016-2017 season.
Despite that fact, Thibodeau is still being linked to major head coaching vacancies in the NBA. The latest rumor is that Thibodeau will be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Mike D’Antoni resigned as the Lakers head coach earlier this week and that has led to Thibodeau being the initial target for Los Angeles.
ESPN Los Angeles reports that the Lakers intend to ask the Bulls for permission to speak with Thibodeau.
The Lakers also plan to reach out to the Chicago Bulls for permission to interview coach Tom Thibodeau, a source told ESPNLosAngeles.com’s Dave McMenamin. The Lakers are closely monitoring the playoffs, believing that several viable candidates could become available should their respective teams be eliminated.
This certainly is an interesting predicament for the Bulls. The Bulls do not want to lose Thibodeau to the Lakers and they can guarantee that by simply denying the Lakers’ request. However, that could create even more tension between Thibodeau and the Bulls’ front office if the head coach wants to speak with the Lakers.
The chances are Thibodeau leaving are slim to none but this certainly is an entertaining storyline to follow into the off-season.
