The Chicago Cubs have dealt away most of their top-level MLB talent in recent years, surprisingly with most going to the Texas Rangers. However there is one player on the Cubs who can go and contribute to a playoff team right now and make an impact, instead of just being a stop-gap: Jeff Samardzija. The 29-year old starter has been dominant all season, and currently sits seventh in the MLB in ERA, with a 1.53. However it has been well-documented that his team’s inability to score runs has left him with an 0-2 record, prompting Matt Garza to tell him to pitch well so the team would be forced to trade him. If the team does plan on trading Samardzija, they need to do it as soon as possible.
Samardzija’s stock has never been as high as it is right now. Any elite team would give prospects in bunches for Samardzija, currently a top 10 pitcher in the MLB at the age of 29. He’s been mowing down the competition and has really become a star. For now.Which is the key point.
Samardzija is not a top 10 pitcher, and won’t mow down the competition forever. In fact, for his career, he has been above-average but not great. Now that he is an elite pitcher, if only for a few days, the Cubs need to decide if they take advantage of Samardzija’s all-time high popularity, or keep him for the future. Any trade after Samardzija falls back to Earth should be seen as a disaster. Even if the team gets a good haul for the pitcher, they will not get what they can get right now, when his interest is at an all-time high.
