Cutler Likes Emery's Moves

Ask Jay Cutler about the moves Phil Emery has made this offseason, and he gets excited. “He’s doing a great job,” Cutler told “Phil’s always had a plan. You can trust him that he’s always going to do the best possible thing for this football team and bring some guys in that are not only good people but are going to help us out on the field. He’s given us some flexibility moving forward, and I’m excited to see what he wants to do next.”

Emery has been busy this offseason in making over the roster and turning the Bears into Super Bowl contenders. He has made over 30 signings, about half of them from other teams.

After revamping the offense after the 2012 season, the Bears went from having one of the worst offenses in the league to being second last season, with only the record-breaking Broncos being better.

This offseason, the focus has been on defense. He added Jared Allen, Lamarr Houston, Willie Young, and Israel Idonije to beef up the defensive line.

The gem of the four, Allen, is a five-time Pro Bowler, who has averaged 14.5 sacks over the past seven seasons. Last season, he had 11.5 sacks, 52 tackles (13 for loss), six passes deflected and two forced fumbles.

“Jared is great,” Cutler said. “When the news came down, I talked to him right away and he couldn’t be more excited.”

When the Allen signing was official, Cutler called Allen at 5:30 in the morning Arizona time. “Cutler called me right away,” a smiling Allen said during his introductory press conference at Halas Hall. “And I was like, ‘Jay, I’ve got to call you back, it’s 5:30 in the morning.’ I’m going back to bed.”

Cutler has not been one who’s been considered a giddy-type player. The moves Emery has made so far, however, has him excited and full of smiles. He is, however, cautiously optimistic.

“Everyone’s confident this time of the year,” Cutler said. “Probably every head coach in the NFL is telling his team the same thing: ‘Why not us this year? We can make it happen.’

Cutler likes what he sees so far. He is looking forward to what Emery does in the draft to solidify the team further. What we know for sure is Emery is doing his best to bring a title to Chicago, and that should make all of Bears Nation smile.
