After a disappointing home opener that resulted in a 7-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, the Chicago Cubs look to earn their second victory of the season on Saturday.
Samardzija started for the Cubs on Opening Day against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In that start, Samardzija pitched seven shutout innings while walking 2 and striking out 3.
Samardzija is set out to prove in 2014 that he can be a No.1 starting pitcher in a rotation. If Samardzija wants to prove that he is worthy of that label, the pitcher needs to be the stopper. The Cubs have lost three of their first four games and the onus will be on Samardzija to turn the Cubs’ losing ways around. That is something that can be done on Saturday if Samardzija has another quality start.
Though, Samardzija shouldn’t shoulder all of the responsibility. The Cubs offense needs to come alive. Emilio Bonifacio is not going to keep up his .579/.619/.684 clip for the entire season. The likes of Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo need to show signs of relevancy on offense.
The starting pitcher going for the Phillies on Saturday may continue the Cubs streak of ineptness on offense. Cliff Lee is starting for the Phillies and will be looking to bounce back from a poor outing on Opening Day. Lee allowed 8 runs on 11 hits in his first start of the season for the Phillies on Monday.
