After an off day on Tuesday, the Chicago Cubs return to the field on Wednesday night to continue their opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
On Opening Day on Monday, the Cubs and Pirates were locked into a pitcher’s duel until Cubs’ reliever Carlos Villanueva allowed a walk-off home run to Pirates’ second baseman Neil Walker in the 10th inning. After the Cubs game on Monday, the concern was the team was facing the same struggles that plagued them in 2013. The Cubs offense disappeared with runners in scoring position and the team failed to create any type of friction for Pirates’ left-handed starting pitcher Francisco Liriano.
The Cubs will be hoping for a different outcome on Wednesday.
Edwin Jackson will be making his first start of the season for the Cubs. Jackson struggled last season with the Cubs. In 31 starts last season, Jackson posted a record of 8-13 to go along with an ERA of 4.98 and a FIP of 3.79. Jackson drew the ire of Cubs fans last season, mainly because of the fact that he was signed to a 4-year, $52 million contract. If Jackson gets off to good start in the first half, then the Cubs front office will likely look to move the veteran starting pitcher by the trade deadline.
Jackson made 4 starts against the Pirates last season. Jackson was 2-2 in those 4 starts last season to go along with an ERA of 3.48. Pirates hitters hit .221 against Jackson last season.
Charlie Morton will be making his season debut for the Pirates on Wednesday. Morton made 20 starts with the Pirates last season while posting a record of 7-4 to go along with an ERA of 3.26 and a FIP of 3.60.
Morton made 3 starts against the Cubs last season. In those 3 starts, Morton posted a record of 0-1 to go along with an ERA of 3.50. Cubs hitters hit .222 against Morton last season.
