The first base position has always been a storied position for the Chicago Cubs. From Ernie Banks to Andre Dawson to Mark Grace or to Derrek Lee, there have been many prominent figures to play the first base position for the Cubs throughout their history.
Over the course of the past two seasons, Anthony Rizzo has become the latest fixture for the Cubs at the first base position. After a down season in 2013, Rizzo is ready to be a leader for the Cubs on and off the field for the team in 2014.
While speaking with David Kaplan of CSN Chicago, Rizzo expressed his honor to be discussed as one of faces of the franchise for the Cubs.
“I think it’s awesome,” Rizzo said. “For people to say that about me is an honor. It’s somewhat humbling as well, because of all the great players that have played here, all the great first basemen that have played here.
“It’s something that comes with hard work. You gotta work hard, go out, have fun, be a good person on the field, off the field, all around.”-Anthony Rizzo, CSN Chicago
Since Rizzo made his debut with the Cubs during the 2012 season, the first baseman has shown flashes of being a leader for the team. There were countless times during Rizzo’s first-year that the rookie would be seen discussing defensive strategy with fellow Cubs infielders. Rizzo has also not shied away from the public eye as he has always made himself available to the media.
The Cubs invested in Rizzo last summer with a seven-year, $41 million deal and the first baseman will likely begin to prove the Cubs spent wisely with his performance in 2014.
