Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer announced on Thursday that third baseman Mike Olt has made the opening day 25-man roster of Cubs.
Not only has Olt made the Cubs 25-man roster, but the third base prospect will be the majority starter at the third base position for the Cubs this season. Luis Valbuena will spell Olt at third base based on pitching matchups.
Olt making the Cubs roster is certainly a triumphant victory for a player that has struggled with sight issues for much of the past two years. Olt was beaned during a Winter League game in 2012 and that is when the third baseman fell from grace. As a result of being hit in the head, Olt battled issues with his vision and that impacted his play on the field during the 2013 season.
Olt reported to Spring Training this season with no sight issues and was looking forward to making the Cubs roster. Olt has gone 14-for-51 this Spring to go along with 5 home runs.
Olt will likely be the Cubs cleanup hitter this season.
