Cubs Roster Moves: John Baker Named Backup Catcher

The Chicago Cub named their backup catcher to Welington Castillo on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the Cubs released veteran catcher George Kottaras. With the releasing of Kottaras, veteran John Baker has been named the primary backup to Castillo.

The Cubs acquired Kottaras in a trade with the Kansas City Royals during the off-season. Baker, entered Spring Training with the Cubs as a non-roster invitee. Baker clearly was the better of the two veteran catchers during Spring Training and that was the basis for the decision.

“Baker really worked hard this spring and I kind of think he just earned a spot,” Renteria said after the moves. -Rick Renteria, ESPN Chicago

With the San Diego Padres last season, Baker appeared in 16 games making 46 plate appearances. Baker hit .150/.261/.150 last season with the Padres in 2013.
