Pro Bowl DE and former sack leader Jared Allen has officially signed a deal with the Chicago Bears. The deal is for four years and $32 million. Allen was also being pursued by the Seattle Seahawks, who re-signed Bears’ target Michael Bennett earlier in the off-season, and the Dallas Cowboys who were looking to replace recently released DeMarcus Ware.
Allen will join three other free agents at the same position, as the team also signed top available DE Lamarr Houston, along with former Detroit Lion Willie Young and former Bear Israel Idonije.
Allen is 32-years old, and is now five sacks away from reaching 10th place on the all-time sacks list. If he were to record 13.5 sacks in this upcoming season, he would be fifth all-time. Allen is also 71.5 sacks behind all-time leader Bruce Smith, a number which could be in reach if he continues to play at the level that he has been.
Last season the Bears were very weak at the position, relying on players like Corey Wootton and David Bass to play a significant amount of snaps at the position. This season, it seems the team may have too many good players, and may need to move players around just to get their best players into the game. Idonije has played DT for the Bears before, although it is not his best position.
