NCAA Tournament Upsets: Picks to Avoid

Every year, NCAA tournament upsets occur and ruin brackets around the country. If you’re lucky enough to pick one of these teams to win, you feel like an expert and want to stick it in Joe Lunardi‘s face. So every year, people try and pick some of these massive upsets, knowing they more than likely will not be right, yet hoping they will get lucky. If you’re looking for a massive upset, avoid these popular picks.

12 Harvard upsets 5 Cincinnati: Harvard is always a team that people predict will win games in the tournament. Last year, as a 14-seed, they upset a dark horse Final Four selection in New Mexico. After that game, people now assume that Harvard will be the Cinderella team again. That won’t happen. Harvard has few quality wins, and they don’t have the defensive strength to slow down Cincinnati star Sean Kilpatrick. Expect him to dominate, and expect a Cincinnati victory.

11 Providence upsets 6 North Carolina: North Carolina is a very good team that has been unfortunately streaky all season. Regardless of their record and struggles, they still have two players who will dominate games, James Michael McAdoo and Marcus Paige. Providence didn’t play a team with this star-power on their way to surprisingly winning the Big East tournament. While they handled Creighton‘s Doug McDermott, that team has no star players behind him. Providence won’t handle two stars, and won’t upset North Carolina.

11 Nebraska upsets 6 Baylor: Baylor is an underrated team. They can score points and dominate the boards, which make them a tough match-up for anybody. Nebraska is a Cinderella pick due to them making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998. Unfortunately, they do not have the talent that Baylor does, and Baylor wants people to know they’re better than the 6-seed they were given. Expect them to not only win this game, but maybe even give 3-seed Creighton a run for their money in the Round of 32.

14 Western Michigan upsets 3 Syracuse: I’ve seen people predicting this 14-seed victory. It won’t happen. People forget how good Syracuse was early in the season. They were by far the best team in college basketball for a long stretch of the season, and now have faltered and are expected to lose to a 14-seed. The Orange provide too much to be upset in the second round, and are another team that could make a Final Four run assuming they don’t have to go through both Kansas and Florida on the way there.
