Phil Jackson to the Knicks Means Trouble for the Bulls

There have been rumors former Chicago Bulls head coach Phil Jackson will be accepting a job in the New York Knicks front office. There has been speculation as to whether Jackson would take the job, but now it seems as a forgone conclusion that he will be working in the Knicks organization. Jackson is one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, and it seems as though where ever he goes he finds a way to win. Bulls fans should be excited for Phil Jackson and eager to see how he performs in his new role, but don’t cheer too hard because he might just spell disaster for the team he coached to 6 NBA championships.

New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony has a chance to become a free agent this offseason, and many Bulls fans believe he may be the missing piece in their search for a championship team. Anthony has proven that he can score at will averaging 25.3 points per game in his career. For the past few seasons the Bulls have lacked a second super star to play with Derrick Rose in order to end their scoring woes.

Although Anthony’s game is far from perfect, his defense is subpar and he is not exactly the most selfless player, at the end of the day Anthony can score, and score a lot. Coming to the Bulls this offseason would have made a lot of sense for Anthony. Their defensive tenacity keeps them in almost every game, he would get to play alongside Derrick Rose (when healthy), they are legitimate title contenders when Rose is healthy, and head coach Tom Thibodeau is one of the best in the league. Even though Anthony lacks defensive consistency, the Bulls have managed a way to maintain lock down defense while playing with Carlos Boozer, so that shouldn’t be a major concern if Anthony came to the Bulls.

About a week ago, it seemed foolish for Anthony not to come to Chicago, but a lot can change in a week. Now, Phil Jackson will be taking a job in the Knicks front office. This is the same Phil Jackson who won 11 NBA championships as a coach and 2 as a player (with the Knicks). Having a chance to play for Phil Jackson is most basketball player’s dream. Now that Jackson has a major role in the organization there would be no reason to leave New York and play for another team. Instead, if he stays in New York he will play under a man who seems to have winning in his DNA. In one week the Knicks went from a team no one wants to play on, to a team players wish they could be on.

As a Bulls fan it is very hard to root against Phil Jackson, but he may have kept the Bulls from getting a proven All-Star. Many Bulls fans criticize Anthony’s game and argue that he would not fit in their system, and those are legitimate concerns, but now it seems we will never know who is right. This offseason the Bulls can try to sway Anthony to come and play in Chicago. They can point to the team’s heart, dedication, and will to win. However, it is very hard to argue that he should play with a team where Nazr Mohammed is the only player who has won an NBA championship instead of playing for someone who not only has one ring….but 13 of them.
