The Chicago Bears have had a focus on the defensive line in free agency, though, the team has not forgot about their hole at the safety position.
With the 49ers in 2013, Whitner tallied 73 tackles to go along with 3 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions.
The Bears could stand to improve at the safety position after both Major Wright and Chris Conte struggled with the team in 2013. Wright is a free agent and his time with the Bears appears to over. The 28-year old Whitner could be the replacement for Wright as a starter for the Bears defense.
Early word for the Bears in free agency is that the team is willing to spend-heavily on the defensive line. With that sentiment, the Bears likely will not be able to afford top free agent safeties Jairus Byrd or T.J. Ward. Whitner, however, would be a nice alternative. After the struggles the Bears endured at the safety position in 2013, any safety added this off-season would be an improvement.
Whitner possesses the physical qualities that the Bears are looking for out of their safety position.
