Don’t look now but the 2014 Chicago White Sox will not be White Sox that your fathers have grown to love.
Instead, the 2014 Chicago White Sox will be a breath of fresh air from the “mash and bash” teams that the Sox have fielded in recent seasons.
Look no further than new starting center fielder for the White Sox, Adam Eaton. Eaton was acquired by the White Sox in a three-team trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks that saw starting pitcher Hector Santiago be traded to the Los Angeles Angels.
Eaton may not be a prolific slugger but the scrappy outfielder often described as a “grinder” will be a symbol of changed times for the White Sox during the 2014 season.
While at SoxFest this past weekend, Eaton claimed that he will play with the same mental and physical edge that former Sox center fielder Aaron Rowand played with.
“I met Aaron in fantasy camp down in Arizona and he seemed like an awesome guy, a great teammate,” Eaton said. “I hope I’m half the player that he was. I remember when he was with the Phillies running into that wall, and I hope I can bring the same type of mental and physical edge that he did.” -Adam Eaton, ESPN Chicago
Certainly that type of style may not be ideal for the longevity of his career, but for Eaton, that’s the only style of play that the 25-year old outfielder knows.
“I don’t see playing the game any other way,” he said. “I may be out of this game in five years because I’m playing so hard but that’s the only way I can play and the only demeanor I can bring to this team.” -Eaton, ESPN Chicago
Eaton was once considered the long-term fixture for the Diamondbacks in center field but after a 2013 season in which he reportedly rubbed some people the wrong way, the outfielder presumably will operate in the same projection with the White Sox. A sentiment that the White Sox figure to benefit from.
The White Sox finished the 2013 season on a dry and stale note. The energetic Eaton is just the type of personality that the team needed. Eaton may not be up there with A.J. Pierzynski but is cut from the same cloth. Meaning Eaton is the type of player that will annoy the hell out of opposing teams and fans but also have the support from his own teammates and fan-base.
Eaton will give White Sox fans a whole new reason to love the team.
