Nikolai Khabibulin pulled, but Chicago Blackhawks comeback 6-5 victory over Ottawa Senators

Jonathan Toews saved the day for Nikolai Khabibulin with his third regular-season hat trick for a 6-5 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night at the United Center.

Khabibulin allowed four goals, including three second-period scores on seven shots. Boos filled the United Center before head coach Joel Quenneville put Corey Crawford in relief.

Toews’ hat trick was his first since Nov. 17, 2010 at Edmonton and a season best four points. Andrew Shaw had two goals and Marian Hossa added a goal and two assists for the Hawks. Milan Michalek and Kyle Turris each recorded a goal and assist while Joe Corvo, Mika Zibanejad, and Zack Smith added a goal for the Senators.

Shaw opened the scoring early for the Hawks’ sixth straight game with a power play goal. Nine seconds into the power play Shaw deflected Patrick Sharp‘s shot from the point for a 1-0 lead.

With less than a minute left in the first the Senators tied it on Michalek’s wrister and went ahead 2-1 after Turri’s score.

50 seconds later Toews began cleaning up the mess with an assist to Hossa to tie it. The Sens then scored two goals within a minute on Corvo’s blast from the blue-line and Zibanejad’s battle in the crease.

Toews leveled the score with a wraparound off a rebound late in the second and then crashed the net, finishing a Johnny Oduya pass to make it 4-4 early in the third.

The go-ahead goal, Toews’ third was scored with the captain knocking in a rebound with less than 11 minutes to go. Shaw’s second score on a rebound made it 6-4 with less than six minutes left before the Sens added a late goal.

Crawford improved to 7-2-2 on the season with 14 saves in relief.

The Hawks return to action on the road Saturday afternoon against the Winnipeg Jets at 2:00 p.m. CT (CBC, NHLN.US, WGN/WGN 720).
