Mike Magee won the Golden Boot scoring championship but the Chicago Fire missed the Major League Soccer postseason for the third time in four seasons as the New York Red Bulls rallied from a 1-0 deficit for a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Red Bull Arena.
The Fire finished sixth in the Eastern Conference and out of the playoff picture, only the top five teams advance. The Red Bulls, however, finished with the MLS’ best record and were awarded the Supporters’ Shield, their first trophy.
The Men in Red needed a win or tie over the Red Bulls to advance following the New England Revolution’s 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Sunday.
Ibrahim Sekagya and Lloyd Sam gave New York a 3-1 lead shortly after halftime. Eric Alexander and Jonathan Steele added scores in the closing minutes for the 5-2 win.
Quincy Amarikwa’s headed in a corner kick in the 90th minute to narrow the final outcome.
Magee scored his 21st goal of the season in the sixth minute for a 1-0 Fire lead. Red Bulls Thierry Henry leveled the score in the 25th minute when he skimmed a shot off the top crossbar.
A win over the Red Bulls would have propelled the Fire to 52 points and third place in the playoffs.
