Jonathan Toews Starts, Chicago Blackhawks Top Washington Capitals 5-4 in Exhibition

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews made his preseason debut Friday night and led the team to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.

Toews wrister was the only shot to find the back of the net in the shootout as Hawks netminder Antti Raanta stopped all three Caps – including Alex Ovechkin.

“I think I almost begged my way to get into this one just because I’m feeling like it’s getting to that point where I want to feel like I’m ready,” Toews said before the game during which he scored the winner in the shootout to help the Hawks defeat the Capitals 5-4. “I know for most guys, there’s going to be that game or two where you have to shake off a little rust. Maybe the short offseason is good that way, that time period or that process doesn’t take too long. So, it’s just kind of annoying that I had to deal with nagging little thing with a hip flexor the last couple of weeks.”

Dylan Olsen recorded a goal and an assist while Jeremy Morin, Brad Winchester and Brandon Bollig tallied scores in regulation. Toews had an assit on Winchester’s goal.

Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson, Eric Fehr and Ovechkin found the back of the net for the Capitals in regulation against Raanta.

The Hawks will take on the Detroit Red Wings for their four exhibition game on Sunday in Detroit at 4:00 p.m. ET (NHLN-US).
