Chris Sale One-Hitter, Chicago White Sox Win 5-1

The Chicago White Sox three-run fourth inning catapulted them to a 5-1 victory over Detroit Tigers ace Max Scherzer on Monday night at U.S. Cellular.

In the Sox’s first home game since Aug. 28, left-hander Chris Sale (11-12, 2.90 ERA) gave up four hits and one hit, struck out eight and walked none in over eight innings.

Paul Konerko hit a two-run, two-out single off Scherzer (19-3, 3.01 ERA) in the first inning to put the Sox up 2-0.

The Sox scored three runs in the fourth inning to reach a 5-0 lead. Conor Gillaspie doubled, and Dayan Viciedo, Jordan Danks, Josh Phegley followed with singles. Phegley’s infield hit to Scherzer, resulted in a throwing error to first base to allow two Sox runs to score.

Victor Martinez hit a solo home run to left-center field off Sox starter Chris Sale in the seventh inning for the lone Tigers run.

Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera and manager Jim Leyland were ejected in the first inning after an argument with home plate umpire Brian Gorman.

Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia did not play as he recovered from dental surgery and Sox pitching coach Don Cooper also did not appear after he was hospitalized with symptoms relating to diverticulitis Saturday.

Both could return before the three-game series end.

Sox right-hander Erik Johnson (0-1, 4.50 ERA) and Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello (11-8, 4.76 ERA) are the starters for Tuesday night’s game in Chicago at 7:10 p.m. CT (WCIU/WSCR 670).
