Chicago Fire defender Gonzalo Segares own-goal in the 89th-minute lifted the Seattle Sounders to a 2-1 victory over the Fire on Saturday night at CenturyLink Field.
Each team scored first-half goals and had limited chances in the second half. As the game looked to go to a draw, Lamar Neagle send a cross to Zach Scott on the left side. Scott’s pass missed Andy Rose, but hit off Segares for the game-winning goal. Neagle had also scored the Sounders’ first goal.
The Fire grabbed an early lead with Mike Magee’s league-leading 15th goal.
Magee’s 26th minute goal came off a feed from Dilly Duka. The goal was the first the Sounders had allowed at home since July 28.
Seattle tied it in the 40th minute on Neagle’s seventh goal of the season. Obafemi Martins split a pair of Fire defenders before sending it to Rosales, who sent a cross to the far post to an open Neagle for the goal.
The Fire (10-11-5) remain two points behind the Houston Dynamo for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Seattle (14-8-4) moved up to the No. 2 spot in the West, two points behind Real Salt Lake.
The Fire return to action Wednesday night on the road against Toronto FC at 6:30 p.m. CT (My50 Chicago/La Ley 107.9).
