Dayan Viciedo hit his second career grand slam and right-hander Andre Rienzo earned his first major league victory in a 5-2 Chicago White Sox victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.
The victory marked the first time this season the Sox have reached a five-game winning streak this season and their 11 victory in 16 games.
Rienzo (1-0, 3.56 ERA), debuted on July 30 and posted four straight no decisions prior to Wednesday night’s victory. He went six innings and allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one.
Alexei Ramirez and Dayan Viciedo aided Rienzo’s effort in the fourth inning.
Ramirez hit a line drive, leadoff double to left field and scored on Adam Dunn’s RBI single to give the Sox an early 1-0 lead. Paul Konerko and Conor Gillaspie added singles to load the bases; Viciedo hit a grand slam off Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (12-10, 4.27 ERA) to left to extend the Sox lead to 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Royals designated hitter Billy Butler hit a leadoff single and scored on Mike Moustakas’ sacrifice fly to cut the Sox’s lead to 5-1.
The Royals cut the Sox’s lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning. Alex Gordon hit a leadoff single and scored on David Lough’s RBI single to right-center.
Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia hit a single in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
Gutherie went six innings, gave up nine hits and five earned runs, and struck out two.
Sox left-hander Jose Quintana (7-4, 3.66 ERA) and Royals right-hander James Shields (8-8, 3.19 ERA) are the project starters for the final game of the three-game series on Thursday night in Kansas City at 7:10 p.m. CT (CSN, WSCR 670).
