Northwestern, Big Ten announce 2016 and 2017 football schedules

The Big Ten announced the conference schedules for the 2016 and 2017 football seasons Thursday, as approved by the Big Ten Athletic Directors. The 2016 season will mark the much anticipated start of the nine-game conference schedule in the Big Ten with the addition of Maryland and Rutgers to the conference.

Northwestern, who will be in the newly aligned Big Ten West Division starting in 2014, will play each of their six West Division foes – Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, and Wisconsin – in both 2016 and 2017. The Wildcats will play three East division teams in a crossover game in 2016 and 2017.

In 2016, Northwestern will face East Division foes Michigan State (Oct. 15) and Ohio State (Oct. 29) on the road and Indiana (Oct. 22) at Ryan Field.

The next year, Northwestern faces crossover opponents Penn State at home (Oct. 7) before traveling to Maryland for the first-ever meeting (Oct. 14). Then the Wildcats return home for two weeks to face a West Division showdown with Iowa before East Division Michigan State comes to town (Oct. 28) to conclude the out-of-division schedule.

Northwestern will conclude both 2016 and ’17 seasons with three straight contests against West Division opponents Purdue, Minnesota, and in-state rival Illinois.
