Illinois Jonathan Brown 2013 Bednarik candidate

Illinois senior linebacker Jonathan Brown has been named to the watch list for the annual Bednarik Award, it was announced Monday by the Maxwell Football Club.

The Bednarik Award is given to the nation’s best defensive player since 1995 and is named after Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik.

Brown was named a Butkus Award semifinalist and honorable mention All-Big Ten selection during his junior season for leading the Illini with 59 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Brown also missed the final three games with a shoulder injury and saw his playing time decreased prior to those games.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Oct. 29, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled Nov. 25. The winner of the 2013 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12.

The Bednarik Award is a part of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. All Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA sports information directors, FBS head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the awards.
