Since joining the Chicago Fire in late May, Mike Magee has been a pivotal goal scorer but it was Chris Rolfe scoring his first goal in nearly three months to give the Fire the 3-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.
The Fire forward sent the game-winning shot past San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch in the 84th minute. Rolfe’s goal came from a Mike Magee feed outside of the box to the back post to give the Fire (6-7-3) their sixth straight victory in MLS play and ninth straight victory across all competitions.
Magee opened up the back-and-forth action early in the 10th minute sending a pass to the right of the box to Patrick Nyarko who sent a failed cross to Dilly Duka. Four minutes later San Jose’s Alan Gordon would open up the scoring.
San Jose Forward Gordon sent a header to the net only to have it redirect back to him for a rebound. Gordon then sent the headed the rebound pass Fire goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi, making his second start on the season.
Tornaghi was in net for starter Sean Johnson, who was away with the U.S. National team.
After several missed chances Dilly Duka finally connected in the 36th minute for his second goal of the season. Duka fielded a feed from Magee, the ball shot up on him and then he lined a shot past Busch for the equalizer.
Patrick Nyarko gave the Fire a temporary 2-1 lead just two minutes into the second half. It was his second of the season and came off an assist from midfielder Dilly Duka, who also scored in the opening half.
The Fire would take a temporary 2-1 lead off a Duka feed to Patrick Nyarko for a goal two minutes into the second half before an own goal by Jalil Anibaba in the 72nd minute.
The 3-2 victory marks the first time since joining the club that Magee has not recorded a goal. Magee and company will look to extend the Fire unbeaten streak to 10 at Toyota Park on Sunday 2 p.m. against Sporting KC (ESPN/107.9 FM)
