Soriano Lifts Cubs In Extras

For the second straight game the Chicago Cubs and the Seattle Mariners went in to extra innings at Safeco Field in Seattle.  However, this time the Cubs were able to come out on the winning side thanks to Alfonso Soriano’s two run home run in the top of the eleventh.  The Cubs won the game 5-3.

Starlin Castro got the scoring started for the Cubs when he hit his fourth home run of the year in the top of the first to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.  The Mariners quickly took the lead back in the second when Justin Smoak hit a solo home run and Dustin Ackley singled to score Mike Zunino. The Cubs took the lead back in the sixth when Nate Schierholtz singled and drove in Luis Valbuena.  Later in the inning, Soriano singled to center and drove in Schierholtz.

Seattle was able to tie it up in the ninth on a two out single to center field by Endy Chavez that scored Michael Saunders.  That was the end of the scoring until Soriano’s home run in the eleventh that sealed it for the Cubs.

Jeff Samardzija gave the Cubs a good start as usual, but this time it was Kevin Gregg who blew the save for the Cubs.  Carlos Villanueva came in and earned the win, which is his second on the year.  Young reliever Blake Parker shut it down in the eleventh and earned his first save of the season.

Aaron Harang gave the Mariners a good start, he went eight innings, gave up just five hits, and three earned runs.  Oliver Perez took the loss for the Mariners, he went just an inning, gave up three hits, and two earned runs.  The loss is just his second of the year.

Brian Bogusevic made a huge play for the Cubs when he came up firing to the plate on a single into left field late in the game.  Brian was able to gun down Raul Ibanez trying to score on a perfect throw to catcher Welington Castillo.  Soriano had a good day in the middle of the lineup, he had three hits in five trips and three RBI’s.

These two teams will round out the three game set tomorrow when Jeremy Bonderman (1-1) and Edwin Jackson (3-10) will oppose each other at Safeco Field.  Game time is scheduled to be 3:10 CT.
