Pre-Game Notes

  • Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum told reporters on Monday that starting pitcher Matt Garza would need to resume baseball activity within the next couple of days if the starting pitcher is going to be a part of the team’s opening day roster. Garza has yet to resume baseball activity, and until he does, it is fair to suggest that the pitcher may not be ready for the start of the season.
  • With Garza’s status uncertain, that increases the importance of Edwin Jackson to the team’s starting rotation. Jackson was signed to a four year, $52 million contract in the off-season and could start the season behind Jeff Samardzija in the starting rotation if Garza starts the season on the disabled list.
  • Remember Arodys Vizcaino? Not only the promising pitcher that the Cubs’ acquired from the Atlanta Braves last season, but the organization’s top pitching prospect. Vizcaino is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and will not pitch for the Cubs during Spring Training. Vizcaino will take part in extended Spring Training when the regular season starts before being assigned to one of the Cubs’ minor league teams. Vizcaino is expected to pitch for the Cubs at some point this season, though it is unclear if that will come in the form as a starting pitcher or a relief pitcher.
