Chicago Cubs Starting Lineup

  3. Nate Schierholtz, RF
  4. Scott Hairston, CF

Pre-Game Notes

  • While the expectation is that Travis Wood will be the team’s fifth starter while Scott Baker continues his rehab from Tommy John  surgery, Cubs’ manager Dale Sveum did not rule out the possibility that Villanueva could be the team’s fifth starter when the season starts. Villanueva signed a two year, $10 million contract with the Cubs and was promised the opportunity to start . For Villanueva, the opportunity begins now with his Cactus League Debut against the Dodgers.
  • With Junior Lake at third base for the Cubs, it is another opportunity for the prospect to make an impression on the Cubs’ coaching staff. The Cubs third base depth is extremely thin at this point. Ian Stewart is suffering from an injury that could impact whether or not he makes the roster, Josh Vitters will begin the season with the Iowa Cubs, and Luis Valbuena is not necessarily an everyday player; meaning Lake could leave a lasting impression with his performance during Spring Training.
  • Scott Hairston is starting in center field for the Cubs today, and the outfielder likely will be expected to be a contributor to the Cubs’ offense this season. Hairston hit 20 home runs for the New York Mets during the 2012 season, and may have to repeat that performance this season for the Cubs’ offense to be successful. Hairston will serve as a platoon partner with David DeJesus in center field and Nate Schierholtz in right field.
